‘You Know What, Mate’ – Ange Fires Back at Celtic Critics

ANGE POSTECGOLOU has come out swinging over criticism of his Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley this week.

The Danish international scored a brace last weekend against Kilmarnock to help the team to a 4-1 victory.

This season, the player has maybe not scored as many goals as he would have liked, however, he still has 11 assists to his name in the SPFL.

The Celtic manager was asked about Matt’s form over the season, finding himself on the bench sometimes with Aaron Mooy’s emergence. Ange didn’t take too kindly to the inference Matt hasn’t been up to scratch.

Speaking to the Scotsman, Ange said: “We work in a public space and that allows people to have an opinion,” the Celtic boss said.

“But as I keep telling the lads the most important opinion, the one that really counts, is the one within these walls. And Matt has had nothing but positive feedback from us.

“I think he’s shown sustained growth this year. It’s his second year playing at such a high level – 18 months, really, given we signed him halfway through last season. He has taken on some enormous challenges this year. He’s played Champions League football, he’s played a couple of different positions for us. I’m delighted that at the age of 22 what he’s achieved for us so far – and there is even more to come.”

Addressing the lack of goals specifically, Ange gave his trademark ‘mate’ treatment to the interviewer.

“You know what, mate? All the kids want plenty of presents for Christmas. Sometimes they need to be grateful for what they have got. The bottom line is Matt has been outstanding for us. I don’t worry about goals and assists. I get it that is what gives them a thrill. What’s more important for us is he’s a big contributor to us being where we are at the moment.”

Matt has been a brilliant signing for Celtic over the piece. The midfielder is clearly ambitious and is maybe a little too harsh on himself.

When he’s in the team, not many people question Matt’s inclusion in the side, he always gives us creativity, and if he’s not assisting he’s vital in the build up. Two goals at the weekend will give him more confidence going into the final part of the season.
