The massive worldwide and reputable publication Forbes has published an article on Scottish Football and more specifically the antics of one club.
The piece breaks down what’s happened to the SPFL before and after the vote to end the season with The Rangers throwing their toys out of the pram.
It ridicules the Ibrox club for their stance and hits the nail on the head when they say it looks more like an attempt to make an ‘us vs them’ with their support in a bid to keep them sweet.
Have a read:
Having failed to get their way twice, Rangers’ next move has been to engage in this bizarre spat with the SPFL. If they get their way and an investigation takes place, and if they have evidence, and if they can conclusively prove that the SPFL is corrupt and bullied clubs, then it would be a bombshell to Scottish football. There are a lot of ifs in that sentence.
Increasingly, it looks like an effort to mobilize their supporters into an ‘us-and-them’ standoff with everyone else, though what the point of all that might be is difficult to fathom. A cursory glimpse at their fan forums would suggest that, if nothing else, an appeal to their base appears to be working. That it makes them look silly to everyone else doesn’t really matter so long as Rangers fans keep buying season tickets and merchandise.
The impasse is now clear: the SPFL are saying put up or shut up, Rangers are saying that they won’t until they get their investigation. The EGM, to be held on May 12, will require Rangers to convince more than just Hearts and Stranraer that they have something worth hearing. If they can’t, or if they fail to produce anything at all, then even their own supporters might begin to question what the fuss was all about.
It’s nothing more than what we see with Donal Trump across the pond at this juncture. Spouting out what they want, when they want with little substance to what’s being said but the people who support them lap it up – even the clever ones.
