Former Celtic academy player Owen Moffat has returned to Scottish football, signing a two-year deal with Greenock Morton after leaving Blackpool.
Moffat, a winger born in Stirling, began his football journey with Celtic’s youth academy at the age of seven. He made his senior debut for Celtic in December 2021 and was part of the squad that won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup that season – albeit a spectator who trained with the first team.
Under Ange Postecoglou, Moffat found first-team opportunities limited at Celtic, leading to his move to Blackpool in August 2022. He joined Blackpool’s development squad on a three-year deal but struggled to break into the first team, making no league appearances during his time there. To gain more experience, he spent the 2023-2024 season on loan at Dunfermline Athletic, where he made 28 appearances and scored three goals.
Moffat’s move to Morton represents a fresh start and an opportunity to establish himself in senior football. His time at Dunfermline showcased his potential, and Morton fans will be eager to see how he contributes to their campaign. As a player with significant youth experience, Moffat’s full time return to Scotland could prove to be a pivotal moment in his career.
Celtic, on the other hand, are struggling to bring through real talent from their academy. Moffat left for England two years ago with high hopes but has hit a dead end. Many come through the system but as of now, the Hoops are struggling to make their academy count.
