MIKEY JOHNSTON is set to return to Celtic in the summer when his loan contract with Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes expires. The Celtic winger’s loan side confirming there’s no chance of a permanent deal being reached.

He’ll leave the side, despite impressing for them in recent times and starting every match since October. But it’s not just on the pitch he’s pleased the club, with the club’s vice president talking up the “extraordinary professional” who joined on loan in the summer.
While admitting they won’t be able to retain the player, the Vice President explained: [Desportivo de Guimaraes]
“We have to enjoy him until the end of the season. He is a great player, and an extraordinary professional who helps the group. Unfortunately, Vitória will not be able to keep him.”
Mikey Johnston has been unlucky so far in his career, and to see him excel at a club is pleasing to see, but it feels like it’s come too late for the player, with Celtic now past the level that he can offer.
Injuries have hampered his development, and his time for a career at Celtic has come and gone.
With Maeda, Jota and Haksabanovic all fighting for the left-wing spot, Johnston will likely play his football elsewhere next season.
