Why signing Roberts on a permanent deal should be a top priority

If nothing else, Celtic’s promising 4-1 victory over Hamilton Accies has shown that our attacking style is significantly boosted by the inclusion of our new number 7.  This article will examine just some of the reasons Celtic should be splashing the cash in order to keep Roberts at the club beyond the expiration of his current season-long loan.

His Link-up Play

The 20-year-old may not have scored in his return game versus Hamilton Accies but his presence was certainly felt by the Celtic support.  His quick distribution, inspired dribbling and incredible link up play boosted the entire attack during his time on the pitch.  The ease at which he slotted back into the team made it look as if he had never left.

The Investment

At only 20 years of age, acquiring Roberts on a permanent deal would no doubt be costly.  However, at the rate he has developed on top of the boost he would to the club during his stay, it’s hard to see Celtic failing to sell the player on for any less than what they pay for him.  In addition, with the level of quality Roberts exhibits at only 20, his potential feels limitless and the winger himself has gone on record praising Rodgers’ ability to develop players so Parkhead may, after all, be the best place for his own development considering the first team football he would no doubt be guaranteed.

Goals

Over the course of the 2016–2017 season, Roberts made a total of 43 appearances, scoring an impressive 15 goals.  Amongst the 15 were a mixture of solo efforts as well as long-range finishes.  The young winger clearly has an eye for goal that would only serve to boost the formidable attack Rodgers has assembled.  Amongst his goals last season was a superb solo effort versus his parent club, Manchester City, exemplifying his ability so score at the highest level for Celtic.

The Fans

Citing his strong affiliation with the fans as one of the main reasons he pushed for a return to Parkhead, it is clear that there is a strong bond between the Celtic support and the English winger.  Breaking the bank in order to sign up our most promising no. 7 in years would be the ultimate way the Celtic board could repay the fans whilst putting out a bold message that Celtic will be seriously moving in the right direction.

Do you think Roberts is worth breaking the bank to sign on a permanent deal?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.
