Why Mechelen’s Summer Move for Stephen Welsh Collapsed – Besnik Hasi Explains

K.V. Mechelen manager Besnik Hasi discussed the Belgian side’s move for Stephen Welsh.

With Hasi identifying one area where Welsh can improve during his time at the club.

He said: (Voetbal Nieuws),

“In fact, they should have both been here in the summer. For various reasons it didn’t work out then. But now it does, so I’m happy. Stephen has trained a lot at Celtic, but does lack match rhythm. Fredrik’s last match was on November 10, but he has also continued to train. We still have to see how fit they are, it is certainly good that they are already training with the team to get to know each other.

“Those positions were the most important. Our sporting director (Tim Matthys) has worked very well. I especially hope that we don’t lose anyone anymore. No one is allowed to leave. Then I look at the boys who have reached the end of their contracts. is always dangerous. Look at Jordi Vanlerberghe last season, he received a nice proposal from Denmark.”

It is interesting to hear that Mechelen were unsuccessful in their attempt to sign Welsh in the summer.

With Dane Murray starting every league game while on loan at Queen’s Park in the Scottish Championship in the first half of the season, Murray hugely impressed under head coach Callum Davidson.

Celtic triggered a callback clause in Murray’s deal, which appears to have sped up Welsh’s move to Belgium.

The Scottish defender is desperate to play, and with Murray improving greatly in a short period of time, the Hoops are seemingly now confident that when rotation is necessary, the 21-year-old can step up, just as Welsh previously did.

Celtic defender Maik Nawrocki could be on the move this month. There is a lot of interest in the 2023 summer signing, who has really struggled with Celtic so far.

Injuries throughout his first season limited his first-team chances, and now he could be on the move.

Ambitious Championship side Oxford are keen on the player as they look to avoid relegation to League 1 this season.
