What Martin Dubravka’s Agent Said About His Future in January

It is no secret that Celtic are hunting to replace the retired Joe Hart this summer. The English stopper had an impactful three years in Glasgow which culminated in him winning seven domestic trophies out of a possible nine.

When he hung his gloves up last month, a gaping hole was left between the sticks for the Hoops.

To fill the void, several names have already been mentioned such as Ugurcan Cakir, Alex McCarthy, and Daniel Peretz. Perhaps the most concrete links to be put forward, though, are those to Peter Vindahl Jensen and Martin Dubravka.

Signing Jensen looks to be complicated, with a move for the latter seeming more simple and realistic.

At 35, Dubravka is getting on in years but he remains an experienced professional. He just played 23 English Premier League games in the season gone by and in 2022, spent a few months on loan at Manchester United.

With a year left on his current Newcastle deal, Dubravka’s future is up in the air this summer.

Back in January, his agent David Zika commented on his long-term future, admitting that when first-choice Magpies stopper Nick Pope returns from injury, Dubravka could look elsewhere.

He said (Sport.sk via The Shields Gazette): “Mato [Dubravka] is satisfied that he has the necessary minutes, but the truth is also that if Nick Pope comes back, United will have two quality goalkeepers and only one can play.

I personally think, and we talked about it with him, that now he has excellent timing for everything. He’s playing, he’s getting better and better in every game, then the European Championships will come and he’ll only have a year left on his contract.

“If he wins the [Euros] in Germany, he can get into an excellent position and either negotiate better conditions in Newcastle, or he will look for another challenge, but we are already ahead of that.

“Everything will depend on him. If he has the appetite and is healthy, I can imagine that he can play at the highest level for 4 or 5 more years.”

With Newcastle looking to add James Trafford to their goalkeeping ranks this summer along with Pope’s impending return, things look ominous for Dubravka in Tyneside.
This, combined with his agent’s previous words and recent reports, a move to Glasgow this summer to take the reigns off Hart could well transpire.
