We’re Nothing Like Rangers; Ange Postecoglou Cuts Impassioned Speech on Media Driven Question

ANGE POSTECOGLOU delivered a fantastic answer to a question that lumped both Celtic and Rangers together, declaring they’re two ‘totally different’ teams.

The question came after Celtic’s visit to Pittodrie at the weekend and how Aberdeen set up against the Scottish Champions. We have had pundits and rival fans in the media claiming Aberdeen will play differently when Rangers come to town.

Ange Postecoglou reckons that should be the case, and he has no idea why the two teams get lumped together so often by the media and managers. Instead of discussing taking on a specific opponent, i.e. Celtic or Rangers, we get treated to is managers talking about taking on the ‘two Glasgow sides’ and how they approach those games.

Ange made it clear Celtic is a completely different side with a separate identity from their counterparts across the city, and if you’re approaching both teams in the same way, it’s probably good news for Celtic.

Ange told CELTIC TV: “The curious thing I find and it is more to do with language in general. It is driven somewhat by you guys in the media but I also hear opposition coaches saying it.

“Before we play teams, some opposition players can’t seem to differentiate between us and Rangers at all.

“It is almost like when you play the top two this is what happens.

“Some of them even talk about it like it is an excursion, like ‘you go through Glasgow and this is what you expect.’

“I don’t get that because if I referred to all the other teams as the other 10 then I am not paying respect to the fact that Livingston are going to be a different challenge tomorrow to St Johnstone at the weekend.

“Even if they both play defensively it will be different,”

“Playing them at home is different to playing them away.

“We approach every game like it is a jump race in racing, where you respect every hurdle and don’t worry about the next one.

“I just find it very curious and if people are assuming because something does or doesn’t work against Rangers that it is then going to be a reflection [against us].

“Different types of players and we play in different ways and that is where the discussion should be.”

As usual, the Celtic manager is spot on. The mind-numbing approach to football in this country and the directive from the media lends itself to some ridiculous tropes.

The very fact we have people moaning about if Aberdeen takes on Rangers differently from how they would handle Celtic proves Ange’s point. It takes nothing into account other than it’s Celtic and Rangers. Beneath that, we have two separate teams, two methodologies, two different sets of players and psychology. It’s time to wise up.
