Brendan Rodgers said his Celtic team were not complacent after losing the Scottish Cup final to Aberdeen on penalties. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, and the Dons won 4-3 in the shootout.

Celtic couldn’t break down Aberdeen during the 120 minutes, but for an Aberdeen own goal, and missed two penalties, ending their hopes of a treble. Rodgers defended the team and said they wanted to win just as much as ever. Celtic had more of the ball, but they didn’t do enough with it.

Much of the Hoops’ play went through the middle, and they struggled to stretch the game. Rodgers admitted that Celtic didn’t do enough in attack.

He said: (BBC Sport), “It wasn’t complacency, no. We had a real desire and hunger to win the game. It just happens, we were very safe in our midfield. Not penetrating enough with and without the ball in those areas.

“We came inside a little too often. It’s a cup final, it can happen. You have to earn it. Doesn’t matter what’s happened before in the league. You have to earn victories here at Hampden. Sadly we weren’t able to do it.

“That is football, that’s sport. We’re not robots. It shows you how incredible this club, and group of players, have been – to be so consistently good.”

Celtic went ahead in the second half thanks to an own goal by Aberdeen defender Alfie Dorrington. But they couldn’t hold the lead. Near the end, a mix-up involving Kasper Schmeichel led to an own goal and Aberdeen equalised.

Extra time brought more frustration, with both sides failing to find a winner. In the shootout, Celtic missed two penalties and Aberdeen made no mistake, lifting the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1990.

Celtic still finish the season with a league title and the League Cup, but this loss means there will be no treble. Rodgers and his squad now look to regroup for next season and prepare for Champions League qualifiers in August. There will likely be changes ahead, and this defeat will hopefully shape how the Hoops approaches the summer transfer window.
