Former Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons on Tuesday night after scoring a stunning own goal for Northampton Town in their clash with Bolton Wanderers.

Shaw, who was signed by Neil Lennon in 2021 on a pre-contract, attempted to clear a dangerous cross inside his own box but instead rifled the ball into the top corner of his own net—a finish that would have been perfect if it was at the other end.

The 23-year-old’s misfortune summed up a difficult night for Northampton, who are battling in the League One relegation zone.
Shaw did bring the game level to 1-1 in the 8th minute, with a goal in the right end, but gave Bolton the lead just before half time. Bolton went on to win the game 3-1.
Shaw made just one competitive appearance for Celtic before loan spells at Motherwell, Morecambe, and Wigan, eventually leaving permanently for Fleetwood Town. He then joined Northampton this January, hoping to reignite his career.
He’s started, and finished, every game for the club since his arrival.
Despite the setback, Shaw will be hoping to bounce back quickly as his side fight for survival in the third tier of English football.
