The social media wing of UEFA will be a little more red faced this morning after Monday evening’s news that Celtic have closed a section of their standing area for the game against Rennes.
To be clear, the section which houses the Green Brigade and the supporters who let off the pyro for the incredible Muhammad Ali banner we saw against Cluj in the Europa League.
It was so impressive and inspirational at the time, the image of the banner and the pyro was beamed around social media and went viral. Soccer Bible even contacting us for the footage we had of the banner on the night.
It wasn’t just the media but UEFA itself who posted an image of the banner on the Monday after the game with the hashtag ‘MondayMotivation’.
It was quickly taken down by their social media team, who at the time posted it when Celtic had been charged by UEFA for the overall display.
A display so good even UEFA positively acknowledge it before the organisation themselves hand down a fine.
Revisiting this now, considering Celtic fans will be locked out of the game on Thursday night just lends more credence to how stupid this all is. If the governing bodies and the club itself were to engage with the support over safe pyro, there would be no need for this.
