UEFA Hit Celtic with £23k Fine

UEFA has sanctioned the Hoops due to their use of pyrotechnics and a “controversial” banner displayed prior to their 2-1 loss against the Italian team. The club received a €3,500 fine for the pyrotechnics and a €20,000 fine for the banner. [Football Scotland]

This is the latest in a series of fines imposed on Celtic by UEFA. The use of pyrotechnics has been a longstanding issue, and the club’s position is clear: it’s hazardous and poses a risk to fans.

A banner that declares proudly that the fans behind it are against fascists seems like a ridiculous move but wholly keeps within UEFA’s ridiculous regulations. Only they can choose what political messages can be on the terraces on matchday, not the clubs or the fans, the lifeblood of the game.

It’s believed that the banner’s imagery, referencing a past match between Celtic and Lazio, also influenced the decision. The banner included a depiction of Mussolini and a representation of Celtic fans’ views on Lazio in not-so-delicate terms.

Before the game, The Green Brigade had claimed they would not be allowed to bring in a display to the game, so it was surprising to see one as the teams emerged. Celtic and the group are currently at odds with a communication breakdown that seems irreparable at this moment in time.

Given UEFA’s form, we can expect more fines for the waving of Palestine flags before the 2-2 draw with Atletico.
