Second-placed Rangers had to get through the qualifiers just to get branded the worst-ever Champions League side, conceding 22 goals in the six group stage matches, a competition record. They finished the group without picking up a single point.

For Celtic, the campaign didn’t go as planned, despite the tough group. Fans reflect back and what ‘what if’, especially in the home tie against Real Madrid.

It was a learning curve for Ange and the bhoys, and they’ll look to bounce back next season and make an improvement in the competition.

The financial boost of being in the Champions League can not be understated. Celtic received just over Є30,000,000. The Rangers received Є21,000,000, while Hearts got just under Є5,000,000, Dundee United pocketed Є650,000 and Motherwell got a payout of Є450,000.

Celtic got Є15,640,000 for reaching the group stage, Є9,096,000 for their 10-year coefficient, Є3,575,000 from TV shares, and a point bonus of Є1,860,000. All numbers from the Twiitter account @AgentScotland.

By the time Celtic adds their gate receipts, and all that comes with that, and their bonuses from sponsors, you’re probably looking at a fee of over Є40,000,000. Not bad for six football matches!
