Jamie Vardy looks set to end his free agency with a move to Serie A newcomers Cremonese, according to respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The former Leicester City striker, who was briefly linked with Celtic over the past week or so – with interest largely stemming from the player’s camp – is now reportedly on the verge of sealing a move to Italy.
Fresh talks between Vardy and Cremonese took place on Wednesday, with Di Marzio reporting that the veteran striker is “very close” to joining the club. The 38-year-old is said to be completely open to the move, and confidence is growing that the deal will be finalised soon.
Celtic never made formal contact regarding a potential move for the former England international, despite Brendan Rodgers leaving the door slightly ajar when quizzed about his former striker.
“Listen, I would not speak about any individual player.
“Of course, I worked really well with Jamie. He was brilliant for me in my time at Leicester.
“So, but no, there’s been so many names floated about, so I wouldn’t disclose anyone.”
With just days left in the transfer window, Vardy’s long search for a new club looks set to end in Italy, not Glasgow.
It comes as Adam Idah has been linked with a Celtic exit.
Swansea are said to be keen on the Irishman, but Celtic aren’t currently in a position to sanction a move of any kind. Behind Idah, there is Shin Yamada, who is yet to prove himself, and Johnny Kenny, who is also attracting a lot of interest.
No matter what happens with Idah, fans would like to see a new striker signed this summer.
