Three Month Countdown; Celtic Star Free to Talk to Clubs in January

David Turnbull’s journey at Celtic has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. Once hailed as the next big thing in Scottish football, the midfielder’s career trajectory has been a series of ups and downs, especially under different managerial regimes at Celtic Park.

When Ange Postecoglou took the reins, many expected Turnbull to flourish, but instead, he found himself on the fringes of the squad. The Australian manager’s tactical setup didn’t seem to favour the young Scot, and as a result, his playing time dwindled. The departure of Postecoglou to Spurs offered a glimmer of hope for Turnbull. With Brendan Rodgers back at the helm, fans were optimistic that the midfielder would regain his form and become a key figure in the squad once again.

The season opener against Ross County seemed to confirm these hopes. Scoring a double, Turnbull looked like he was back to his best, and the Celtic faithful were buzzing. However, since that explosive start, his performances have been somewhat subdued. Even in the monumental win at Ibrox, Turnbull, though a starter, didn’t make a significant impact on the game.

Now, with Reo Hatate set to return from injury and the recent acquisition of Bernardo from Benfica, questions are being raised about Turnbull’s role in the squad. Rodgers has a plethora of options in midfield, and it’s unclear where Turnbull fits into these plans. With just three months left before he can talk to other clubs [his contract runs our next summer], the clock is ticking for both the player and the club to make a decisive move.

So, what’s next for David Turnbull? Will Rodgers see him as an integral part of his plans, or is his playing time about to become even more limited? Given the current circumstances, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him consider his options. If he’s not getting the game time he desires and deserves, a move away from Celtic Park in the January window could very well be on the cards.

From a Celtic perspective, losing a talent like Turnbull would be a blow, especially to a club that prides itself on nurturing homegrown talent. However, football is a results-driven business, and Rodgers will have to make tough decisions to ensure the team’s success.
