One Celtic Jota Mystery Remains

Jota’s return to Celtic has sparked excitement amongst the support, but one key detail was conspicuously missing during his unveiling—his squad number. While the Portuguese winger was all smiles in the green and white hoops, with a Celtic scarf draped around his shoulders, the absence of a number on the back of his shirt has left fans speculating.

Traditionally, when a new signing or returning player is presented to the media, they pose with their chosen number proudly displayed. This wasn’t the case for Jota, who confirmed to CeltsAreHere in his press conference that “that’s still to be decided.” Could this be an indicator of further movement in the final week of the transfer window?

The Numbers Game: 7 or 17?

Two squad numbers that Jota has been linked with stand out: 7 and 17. Both are currently occupied, but circumstances could open up opportunities for Jota to claim one of them.

Number 17: Jota wore this number during his first spell at Celtic, becoming a fan favourite while donning it. Currently, it belongs to Maik Nawrocki, a player who has struggled with injuries and found himself out of favour under Brendan Rodgers. With rumours suggesting a possible loan move for Nawrocki, Jota could reclaim the number he made iconic in his first stint.

Number 7: A coveted number at Celtic, most famously worn by club legend Henrik Larsson, this shirt is currently occupied by Luis Palma. However, the Honduran winger has struggled to get into the team, and reports suggest he could also be on the move. Should Palma leave before the window closes, it would be a statement for Jota to take on this prestigious number.

With the transfer window closing on 3rd February, there’s still plenty of time for squad reshuffling. Both Nawrocki and Palma are surplus to requirements, and their exits would free up two prime shirt numbers for Jota.

Either way, Jota’s return to Celtic has already reignited the connection between the player and the supporters. Whether it’s 7, 17, or something else entirely, one thing is certain: the name on the back of the shirt will be the one that matters most.
