The Matches Celtic’s Asian Cup Players Could Miss

It is no secret that Celtic are going to have several unavailable players over January and February amid the Asian Cup. South Korean duo Oh and Yang have already been confirmed as heading to the tournament.

Along with these bhoys, the likes of Kyogo, Reo Hatate, and Daizen Maeda could go to Qatar with their nation, Japan.

In the group stage, which kicks off on January 12th, each country is guaranteed three matches. The initial round of the tournament ends on January 25th, after which the knockout round begins.

Japan are in a group with Indonesia, Iraq, and Vietnam meanwhile South Korea have been drawn against Malaysia, Jordan, and Bahrain. It is fair to say both sides will likely make it out of their sections.

The Round of 16 begins on January 28th, with the final taking place on February 10th. The worst-case scenario for Celtic is that Japan and South Korea both make it to the final.

If they do, Brendan Rodgers could be missing several assets for up to five games including Buckie Thistle at home, Ross County at home, Aberdeen away, Hibernian away, and another Scottish Cup tie should the Celts put the Highlanders to the sword.

If there are any early exits from Japan or South Korea then the Asian Celts could return early and miss some of the aforementioned matches. At the latest, though, they will likely be back for the Hoops’ clash with Kilmarnock in the cinch Premiership on February 17th.

For the champions, the situation is not ideal. One cannot begrudge players the opportunity to go and represent their nations at a major tournament, however, and all of those within the club will certainly be backing those who are away.
