The Hidden Reason Behind Marco Tilio’s Permanent Celtic Exit

Marco Tilio is set to leave Celtic for Rapid Wien in a permanent transfer, after both clubs agreed to change the terms of his expected move.

The 23-year-old was originally due to join the Austrian side on loan for around €400,000, with a clause that would make the move permanent after 20 appearances, pushing the total fee into seven figures.

That plan has now been dropped, with Rapid instead working out a full transfer straight away on terms that better suit their budget.

Tilio signed for Celtic in the summer of 2023, from Melbourne City but struggled to make an impact under Brendan Rodgers.

He played just twice in all competitions before heading back to Australia on loan in January. While there were hopes he could return and push for a place, it became clear he wasn’t part of the club’s long-term plans.

The updated deal will now bring his short spell in Glasgow to a close. From Rapid’s side, it’s a chance to take on a player who still has potential without the risk of a bigger fee later on.

Celtic’s decision has also been influenced by FIFA’s new rules on international loans. Clubs can now only send out six players on loan to foreign sides, excluding under-21s and homegrown players.

With four first-team players already out, and both Stephen Welsh and Hayato Inamura expected to go, Tilio’s permanent exit helps keep those limited spots free.

It also frees up a non-EU place in the squad as Celtic continue to reshape the team for the season ahead.
