The Celtic Star Charlie Mulgrew Has a “Soft spot” For

Former Celtic utility man Charlie Mulgrew has a soft spot for a certain Hoops defender.

The 38-year-old hung up his boots last year and quickly stepped into coaching. Already in possession of his UEFA A License, Mulgrew is hunting for his first role and there would be no better place to begin his journey than at Celtic.

Indeed, the ex-Scotland international has applied for the vacant role of under-18s manager at the club having been interviewed already.

He is currently waiting to hear back and told CeltsAreHere that he checks his phone every day.

Mulgrew has a wealth of experience to pass down to the young players given his path of departing Celtic permanently at 20 before returning to the club four years later after improving. A man whose story is somewhat similar is Liam Scales.

The Irish defender left the Hoops on loan almost two years ago without expecting to make it in Glasgow.

When he returned from Aberdeen, however, he was given an opportunity and is now a regular starter for the Bhoys.

Mulgrew admires his journey: “I’ve got a soft spot for Scales as well, to be honest”, he told CeltsAreHere.

“He steps into the team and was the one centre-back that was never injured all season and stepped up. He can relate to myself a wee bit in terms of that.

“Of course, there’s doubters there. As soon as things go a wee bit not great, fingers get pointed at him.

“I think he’s been brilliant this year and really stepped up at vital times for Celtic and I’m really happy for him.”
