Teddy Sheringham Spreads Lazy Celtic Narrative

Teddy Sheringham has poured cold water on the idea that Brendan Rodgers’ domestic success with Celtic will boost his appeal to Premier League clubs this summer.

The former Manchester United and England striker questioned the strength of competition in Scotland and implied that success north of the border doesn’t carry the same weight as it once might have. Speaking about Rodgers potentially landing a job in England’s top flight, Sheringham said:

“I don’t know if Brendan will be a man in-demand this summer if Premier League clubs are looking to make a change.”

While acknowledging that Rodgers could lead Celtic to another domestic treble, Sheringham was quick to undercut the achievement, suggesting the league’s current landscape made such dominance inevitable.

“Rangers are going well in Europe, but they haven’t offered any kind of challenge for the Scottish title this season… Celtic just sweep everything up, and would they be doing that without Brendan? You would have to look at the competition and say that they probably would,” he told casinoapps.com

He added that while he personally rates Rodgers, praising his style and demeanour, he isn’t convinced that managing Celtic will necessarily propel him back into a top Premier League job.

“I still like him. I think you could do a lot worse than get Brendan Rodgers in your football club. I like his manner. I like his calmness in the way he approaches things. He gets his team playing in the right manner.”

It’s a long-standing, lazy, narrative that often undervalues success in Scotland, regardless of the achievements or pressure that comes with managing either half of the Glasgow divide.

The reality is that while Rodgers’ credentials in Scotland may be questioned by some down south, his track record – both at Celtic and Leicester – remains a strong one, despite his last season with the Foxes. Whether Premier League clubs view him as a contender remains to be seen, but Rodgers will be focusing on finishing the job at Celtic first.
