Sutton Suggests Rodgers’ European Approach Will Alter In Second Spell

Albeit domestic dominance is hugely pleasing for Celtic fans, there is always that bit inside every supporter that longs for European success. This is not something that has been delivered for a long while but Brendan Rodgers will be aiming to be the man to finally bring it.

Former Hoops hero Chris Sutton believes that the 50-year-old will change his approach compared to last time around in order to be more prosperous on the continent. He said (Sky Sports):”Brendan had some harrowing nights during his first spell at Celtic, but he’s talked about learning from his experiences in the Premier League. Leicester City beat Manchester City 5-2 and he spoke about adapting in that game where they became more of a counter-attacking team. That suggests he’ll set up a little bit differently and be a little bit more cautious.”

Last season in Europe under Ange Postecoglou, Celtic were extremely open and expansive, focusing on the attacking side of their game. Although the Bhoys probably should’ve taken more from the campaign, they ultimately finished bottom of their group.

This season, Sutton believes there will be a more conservative, counter-attacking approach in the Champions League that could wield greater success for his old team, including at home. The treble-winning centre forward is sick of disappointing European nights at Parkhead, quipping: “I do think that the home form has to improve. I get sick and tired of going to Celtic Park and telling everyone it’s great on a Champions League night and then they don’t perform. It’s really important to get that fear factor back as I’m fed up just going there for the music.”

European prosperity is overdue at Celtic. The Bhoys have not won a knockout tie on the continent since 2003 when Martin O’Neill’s side defeated Boavista to get to the UEFA Cup Final. Rodgers could well be the man to deliver long awaited continental success, particularly if his assumed change in approach works.
