“Beggar Belief” – Sutton Rips Into Celtic for “Same Old Movie”

Chris Sutton has issued a warning over Celtic’s current transfer strategy in his latest Daily Record column, calling out the club’s lack of urgency just a week before the Premiership season kicks off.

The former striker pulled no punches in his latest column, expressing concern that Brendan Rodgers’ squad is currently weaker than the one that finished last season.

Sutton pointed to Brendan Rodgers’ comments about Yang being a current starter as a clear indicator of the club’s lack of depth. A few months ago, fans would have accepted Yang going out on loan, yet now Celtic can’t afford to lose him. Sutton said the situation “should be a warning” to the board.

Sutton questioned how the club allowed Nicolas Kuhn and Kyogo to leave without a replacement lined up, especially after Kyogo reportedly made clear he might depart months earlier. “Kyogo apparently made noises about going months before he departed… those were not surprises so plans should have been in place,” Sutton said. “Why weren’t the replacements in the pipeline BEFORE these players left?”

While Rodgers has tried to clarify the distinction between “club signings” and his own choices, Sutton argues the real issue lies in the level of those players. The squad needs experience, not just future prospects.

Sutton also expressed concern that Celtic may be falling into familiar bad habits. Despite a successful domestic campaign last season, he believes the board is taking unnecessary risks by delaying recruitment. With the Champions League play-offs fast approaching, he argues the club should already have secured first-team-ready reinforcements.

The growing concern from fans is echoed in Sutton’s blunt conclusion. “It does beggar belief that they are a week out from the league kick-off and in the same old movie once again.”
