Sutton Identifies ‘Major’ Celtic Problem

CHRIS SUTTON believes Celtic have a significant problem that needs fixing this summer.

Callum McGregor consistently plays some of the most minutes in Europe; in fact, at one point, he’d played the most.

Sutton believes that Celtic can’t rely on their captain to continue playing over sixty games a season. But the bigger worry is that Sutton doesn’t see a layer already at the club that could step in and fill in for the skipper if he’s unavailable for a match.

Writing in the Daily Record, Chris Sutton expressed his concerns;

In actual fact, they might need a couple in there because you can not rely on McGregor to play over 60 games every single season surely.

The captain is so important. Not only is he a leader of the group but he’s a wonderfully-gifted footballer into the bargain.

McGregor oozes class and, when he is at his best, which is almost every week, he links the entire team. Knits it all together middle to front.

If that’s not working, he takes the bull by the horns and makes it happen on his own.

But when he’s not there, it’s a major problem. We saw that at the start of last season when he had an injury. Celtic were better equipped to cope after the break when he suffered his facial issue but it was still imperative to get him back.

I don’t know if the other boys at the club could do the job he does.

After Bitton’s exit, Celtic only really have one player that’s able to step into the midfield – Yosuke Ideguchi. McCarthy and Soro aren’t of the standard Postecoglou’s Celtic requires, but Guchi looks like he’s set to play a more significant role this season.

With Postecoglou’s high-intensity football, it would be beneficial to have a few more midfield options in case something happens with Callum McGregor.
