Sutton: Clement Can Be Brendan Rodgers’ ‘Next victim’ on Thursday

Former Celtic striker-turned-pundit Chris Sutton thinks Rangers manager Philippe Clement can be Brendan Rodgers’ next victim.

The Irishman has worked against several Ibrox bosses throughout his two spells in Glasgow, including the likes of Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha, Graeme Murty, Steven Gerrard, and Michael Beale.

Clement is the latest, and so far, Rodgers has the upper hand on the Belgian.

The Glasgow sides have met six times since the 50-year-old took charge in Govan. Celtic have won five of those meetings, the other ending in a 3-3 draw.

The current Rangers boss has continually failed in Glasgow derbies, and Sutton reckons if he fails to get a result when Celtic come to Ibrox next Thursday, it is the end of the road: “Brendan Rodgers spoke a year ago about facing five Rangers managers and each time the Ibrox team were coming,” he said (RecordSport).

“By Friday, he might have to nudge that number up to six. Rodgers has wiped the floor with permanent Rangers managers during his two spells at Celtic. He’s thrust most of them out the door, and Philippe Clement could easily be his next victim within the next few days.

“If he delivers another boot to the Belgian on Thursday, Rodgers will be onto his next challenger from across the city because, contract or no contract, I don’t see how Clement can survive yet another Old Firm reverse.”

Any time Clement builds some form of credit or momentum with Rangers, he always finds a way to negate it.

The Gers were seemingly ‘back’ after a string of decent results and a cup final loss, although the Boxing Day defeat to St. Mirren put them back to square one.

It is difficult to see Clement surviving a Celtic win at Ibrox next Thursday, but before that, Glasgow’s big two have games to deal with tomorrow.

The champions welcome St. Johnstone to Parkhead as the Gers travel to Motherwell in another crucial weekend.
