Belgian Pro League side KV Mechelen have reignited their pursuit of Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh with a fresh loan bid for the upcoming January transfer window, according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.

This renewed interest comes after the Hoops rejected an offer from the same club during the summer transfer window.
At 24 years old, Welsh finds himself in a challenging position at Parkhead. Despite once being a promising talent, he has struggled for consistent game time this season, making just one start — a 5-2 win over Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup.
Currently, he is behind the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty, and Liam Scales in Brendan Rodgers’ pecking order.
Welsh’s desire for regular first-team football is understandable, and a temporary move could offer him the platform to continue his development and showcase his abilities. The centre-back remains under contract at Celtic until 2027, but he’s clearly at a crossroads in his career.
While Celtic were reluctant to part ways with him in August, the situation has shifted as the player seeks more opportunities and with the Hoops well-covered in central defence.
A loan could allow Welsh to put himself in the shop window ahead of the summer transfer window when he could look for a permanent move.
