Summer Celtic Transfer Link Re-emerges; Loan to Buy Suggested

Celtic have once again been linked with a move for Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Mahamadou Diawara.

The Hoops were linked with a move for the 19-year-old in the summer but eventually moved on to other targets, such as Arne Engels and Luke McCowan, who arrived on transfer deadline day.

Ahead of the January transfer window, which opens in just over three weeks, however, a swoop for the Frenchman hasn’t been ruled out.

Celtic’s reported offer for Diawara in the summer was an initial one-year loan with an 8m buy option. It was rejected, although, according to L’Equipe (via RecordSport), they remain keen on the midfielder.

It is said that Diawara isn’t happy with the number of first-team minutes he’s played in the opening half of the season and that a January exit is ‘gaining ground’. Celtic have emerged as potential suitors, with a six-month loan with an option to buy the ‘most likely scenario’.

Given Brendan Rodgers has Engels, McCowan, Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, and Paulo Bernardo all at his disposal, central midfield won’t be a priority position in the January transfer window, one assumes.

Regardless, adding more depth to the engine room ahead of a crucial second half of the season will only serve Celtic well.
