Celtic fans would love to see Fraser Forster stick around on a permanent basis and maybe even finish his career at Celtic Park.
However, there’s a lot of ifs and buts in any deal and the current uncertainty doesn’t help things.
The Swiss Ramble recently delved into the Southampton club’s finances and unearthed some interesting numbers which could favour Celtic.
The club posted a £41m loss with £115m in wages committed going forward. It’s not sustainable at all. Fraser Forster is on big money at Southampton and a long term deal and not in the club’s plans.
Speaking about Fraser earlier this year, Ralph Hasenhuttl seemed very disinterested in Fraser to the point he said the player had a good chance of staying at Celtic.
“This has been bubbling away for sometime now and Ralph hasn’t given many comments outside ‘It’s nice he’s doing well, but I’m not focused on him’.” The Southampton boss told Football Fancast.
“But my understanding is Forster is willing to take a pay cut to stay at Celtic, so the chances of him staying in Scotland are pretty good.”
Ultimately, Celtic could probably negotiate a fee for the player in their comfort zone, then it would be up to Fraser to negotiate compensation from his Southampton contract and take a lesser wage at Celtic.
The player will have to pick more money or more glory going forward. It’s not an easy thing for any player to choose between but Fraser has had a fantastic season with the bhoys after languishing in the Southampton reserves.
If Celtic don’t at least ask the question, I will be bitterly disappointed.
