Brendan Rodgers says Celtic are still in a strong position to reach the Champions League, even after Wednesday’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Kairat Almaty.
Celtic had to be patient against Livingston, but eventually broke through with three second-half goals to take control of the game. The result gives them a boost ahead of Tuesday night’s key second leg in Kazakhstan, though Rodgers stressed the need to start games more sharply.
In the first leg against Kairat, Celtic had most of the possession but didn’t take their chances, leading to boos from the home crowd. Still, Rodgers believes the team can finish the job away from home, if they travel well and prepare properly for what’s ahead.
Alistair Johnston won’t be available after picking up a hamstring injury in the first leg. With the defender ruled out and pressure building, Tuesday’s match will be a big mental test for the squad. But Rodgers is keeping the focus on what they can control.
He said: (BBC Sport), “We should have started strongly, we’ve done virtually every game this season, but we didn’t.
“We’re still in a great place, going over there.
“We’ll get our travel right, get operationally everything as best we can and then we have a great chance to go there and qualify.”
Celtic will make the long trip this weekend with the focus on rest and getting ready for Tuesday’s match. The backroom staff are working to make sure everything goes smoothly, with the distance and time change both big factors. Rodgers knows there’s little room for mistakes, but thinks a calm and sharp display can see them through.
The Hoops have faced tough away games in Europe before, and Rodgers will be looking to his senior players to guide the team in what’s likely to be a tough setting. Callum McGregor and Kasper Schmeichel will be key in keeping things steady and helping the team stay focused through the travel and pressure.

A win in Kazakhstan would not only take Celtic into the league phase but also help lift the mood among fans, some of whom showed their anger after the first leg. Tuesday’s game will be watched closely, and Rodgers understands just how high the expectations are.
With the Livingston job done and three more league points in the bag, the focus is now fully on Tuesday night. Celtic’s place in the Champions League is still up for grabs, but Rodgers is sure his side can take control and get the result they need.
