Celtic have this morning announced that centre-back Stephen Welsh has signed a new contract with the club that will see him stay at Paradise until at least the summer of 2027.
There were rumblings on social media about a potential extension for the Scotland youth international on Thursday evening, and the news has now been formally confirmed. Welsh, 23, has played for Celtic his whole career and, under Brendan Rodgers, will look to improve continually.
The Irish gaffer spoke on Sunday after the Aberdeen match about how he saw Welsh in his plans, and now, those words have come to fruition.
In the squad, Welsh is a more than valuable player to have around. He is a more than ample option domestically and helps fill part of his side’s homegrown quota required for Europe.
Welsh may not be the first name on the team sheet, but he is a true Celtic man who knows the club and what it means. Having players like him around is invaluable, and news of his new four-year contract extension is only positive.
