Stephen Welsh could be set for a late move away from Celtic, with the centre-back in talks to join Motherwell on loan ahead of tonight’s 11 pm transfer deadline.
The 25-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Belgian side Mechelen, is keen to secure regular first-team football. While a move to Plymouth Argyle had been lined up earlier in the window – with an option to buy included – Celtic’s delay in pushing through the deal saw the English Championship side turn to alternative targets.
Now, Motherwell have emerged as serious contenders to land the Scotland international, with Record Sport reporting that the Steelmen are hopeful of concluding a deal in the final hours of the window. Welsh is understood to be open to the move, with game time at Celtic looking limited amid strong competition in central defence.
A move to Fir Park would offer the centre-back a much-needed opportunity to play regularly and rebuild momentum in his career.
Motherwell are playing some nice, attacking football this season, but are still looking for their first win. It’s four draws and six goals conceded so far for the side.
With just hours left before the deadline, this could be one of the final pieces of business for Celtic this summer.
