Stephen Welsh has sealed a season-long loan move to Motherwell, bringing an end to a frustrating summer at Celtic, where game time looked unlikely.
The 25-year-old had been expected to leave Parkhead earlier in the window, with a deal agreed in principle to join Plymouth Argyle on loan with an option to buy. However, delays from the Celtic side saw that move fall through, and the English club moved on to other targets.

Now, with just hours left in the transfer window, Welsh has completed a switch to Fir Park. He underwent a medical earlier on Monday and has now finalised the paperwork on the loan move. Motherwell were keen to strengthen their defensive options and have moved decisively to secure a player with significant domestic and European experience.
Welsh spent last season on loan in Belgium with Mechelen, and while he showed promise, he returned to find himself further down the pecking order at Celtic following new additions and the return of other senior centre-backs. With Brendan Rodgers not including him in his long-term plans, a move was always likely.
This loan gives Welsh the opportunity to play regular first-team football in the Scottish Premiership, something he has publicly admitted he needs at this stage of his career.
