Vasilis Barkas did not enjoy the best time at Celtic in the 2020/21 and beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.
Whether it be under Neil Lennon or Ange Postecoglou, the Greek ‘keeper, who was signed for five million euros (Transfermarkt), has been sub par.
Mistake after mistake cost him in green and white thus last summer, he was shipped out on loan to Utrecht in the Netherlands for the 2022/23 season.
In Holland, the 28 year old has rekindled his career, standing out between the sticks and gathering a wealth of interest in himself, as much that Celtic have reportedly put a £4.4 million price tag on his head.
It is almost certain that Barkas will leave Glasgow permanently this summer and one destination that can be ruled out is his current loan team Utrecht.
The club’s sporting director Jordy Zuidam said (Daily Record):
“I would expect a number of players to be leaving the club at the end of the season, including Vasilis Barkas.”
Zuidam went on to say there was no buy option in the loan that brought Barkas to Utrecht although he will not 100% rule out signing the Greek permanently:
“To be honest, the chances of him staying are minimal. But of course, I always try to look at the possibilities and explore them. Then I will see if there is still a chance.”
Of course, it looks unlikely Barkas will join Utrecht on a permanent basis yet one shouldn’t rule it out.
Anything can happen in football but it is certain Celtic will be getting some added income this summer as a result of the 28 year old’s likely departure.
