SPFL Side Say Scotland’s VAR “Not Suitable for Purpose” in Scathing Statement

Aberdeen has voiced significant concerns regarding the Video Assistant Referee system following a disallowed goal in their recent clash against Livingston.

The issue arose when a critical late-game goal was nullified due to a malfunction in the Hawkeye system, which is used to assist VAR decisions, particularly for offside calls.

This malfunction prevented VAR officials from conclusively determining if a player was offside, leading to a decision that Aberdeen argues compromised the integrity of the match.

The VAR decided it should be no goal, overruling the on-field decision of onside and effectively guessing if a player was on or offside.

The Scottish FA has acknowledged the problem and launched an investigation into why the technology failed at such a crucial moment.

There have been many problems with VAR for most if not all clubs. Aberdeen says this is because Scottish football can not afford to bring in equipment which is up to scratch.

A section of their statement read: “What this situation demonstrates, in our opinion, is that the version of VAR that Scottish football has, or more accurately, can afford, is not suitable for the purpose in which it is intended. It perfectly highlights the limitations in the technology, the inappropriate implementation, the consistency of decision-making, and the negative impact on the overall experience for the match-going supporter.”
