SPFL Rule Change That Could Hand Celtic Boost

The SPFL has introduced a new policy that could benefit Celtic ahead of their return to Champions League qualifiers next season.

From the 2025/26 campaign, Scottish Premiership clubs competing in European play-off rounds will be permitted to postpone one league fixture to help with their preparations.

Specifically, teams can now choose to reschedule their matchday three fixture, originally set for the weekend of 23/24 August, if it falls between the first and second legs of UEFA play-off ties. [SPFL]

This rule change was approved by the SPFL Board and is designed to give clubs a better chance of qualifying for the lucrative group stages of European competition by easing their domestic schedule during a crucial period.

The development comes at a pivotal time for Celtic. With Scotland set to lose its automatic Champions League group stage berth due to UEFA coefficient changes, Celtic will enter next season’s competition at the play-off round. The Hoops are expected to be seeded, but qualification is far from guaranteed, and any edge could prove crucial.

The flexibility to shift a Premiership match could help Brendan Rodgers and his players maximise their preparation and recovery for these pivotal European encounters, where the stakes—in both financial and sporting terms—are enormous.

It’s a pragmatic and timely move from the league, aligning with similar approaches taken in other nations to support their clubs in continental competition.
