Sky Sports Panel: Arne Engels Branded ‘Reckless’ But Didn’t Cross the Line

Celtic’s Belgian midfielder Arne Engels made a significant impact during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Hibernian at Celtic Park, opening the scoring for the Hoops in a commanding performance. However, his afternoon wasn’t without drama, as a challenge on Joe Newell brought the spotlight of VAR upon him.

Engels, who arrived at Celtic as the club’s record signing, was shown a yellow card for his tackle on the Hibs midfielder. Newell had slid to ground to contest the ball when Engels went in, prompting referee Alan Muir to book the Celtic man. Moments later, the familiar VAR graphic appeared on the stadium screen, indicating a review for potential serious foul play.

After a brief check, the yellow card was deemed sufficient punishment, and play resumed. The decision drew attention post-match, with Sky Sports’ Ref Watch featuring former referee Dermot Gallagher providing his perspective.

Speaking on the incident, Gallagher explained on Sky Sports: “He’s reckless, he doesn’t need to make that challenge, but I don’t think he stamps down on him. The yellow card is the correct decision.”

The panel agreed with Dermot. They described the challenge as a tap rather than anything with force that could have hurt Newell.

While Engels avoided further sanctions, the incident highlighted areas of his game that still require refinement. Despite his promising display, including the crucial opener, the Belgian knows he has work to do to secure a spot as an automatic starter in Brendan Rodgers’ side.

His hefty price tag and flashes of brilliance have set expectations high, but consistency and discipline will be key as he adjusts to the demands of the Scottish game.

Celtic fans will hope Engels can build on this performance as the Hoops continue their pursuit of domestic and European success before Christmas.
