Celtic have confirmed their starting line-up for tonight’s Champions League play-off first leg against Kairat Almaty at Celtic Park.
Brendan Rodgers has named a strong side as the Hoops look to take control of the tie before heading to Kazakhstan next week. With a place in the league phase on the line, there was little room for experimentation in tonight’s selection.
There had been some intrigue ahead of kick-off around how Rodgers would shape his team. Over the early part of the season, Celtic have generally stuck with a settled back four, with Kasper Schmeichel taking up the gloves behind a defence featuring Cameron Carter-Vickers and Kieran Tierney. Alistair Johnston and either Liam Scales or Auston Trusty have typically completed the back line.
In midfield, Callum McGregor has continued to anchor the side, with Reo Hatate back to top form, and Benjamin Nygren growing in influence. Rodgers has at times looked to tweak the midfield depending on the opposition, but tonight’s tie called for experience and control.
Further up the pitch, Adam Idah has tended to lead the line this season, providing a physical presence through the middle. Daizen Maeda has typically operated off the left, using his energy and direct running to stretch defences. On the opposite flank, James Forrest has seen regular involvement from the right, bringing experience and composure in the final third.

Tonight’s team selection reflects the importance of the occasion, with Rodgers clearly aiming to take a decisive step toward Champions League qualification at Paradise. The Irishman will be hoping for a sharp, aggressive start to break down a Kairat side expected to sit deep and frustrate.
Kick-off at Celtic Park is at 8:00pm, with live coverage available on TNT Sports 1. We’ll have more from the match and full post-game reaction following the final whistle.
