VAR took centre stage today as Celtic and Hearts competed in a seven-goal thriller in the capital.
From start to finish, VAR was a shambles. It’s been a disastrous introduction for the equipment, with some questionable interventions at Easter Road on Friday night. The spotlight is well and truly on VAR this weekend, with managers attending a meeting about it on Monday.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Postecoglou Sarcastically joked about the equipment taking centre stage and winning the three points. He said;
“It was a cracking game. What do I know? VAR with the starring role and three points. Credit to the lads because it’s not easy coming here with their crowd always up and about.
“With the whole circus around VAR, it becomes anything but the football, but in that context, we found a way to win.”
Speaking to PLZ Soccer, the manager added;
“I don’t like the standing about. We’re here to watch the football, not to sit around and wait for people to make decisions about things.
“I thought we had a clear-cut handball, so what do I know, mate? We haven’t had a penalty all year. I know people, and opposition managers, are saying that we get everything, but the only penalties we’ve taken so far are in training. So, I’m looking forward to getting one.”
VAR certainly was a “circus” on Saturday.
The Celtic squad has had experience with VAR on the European stage, but it went smoothly, and no one had any complaints about the technology.
As usual, when it enters Scotland, it goes horribly wrong. It’s almost as if VAR is only as good as the people using it!
It’s a shame, with some quality moments in the game, VAR overshadows the match. Celtic now look ahead to Tuesday night with a game against Shakhtar to prepare for.
