Shay Given Jumps to Brilliant Defence of Ange Postecoglou

Self-confessed Celtic supporter and former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has jumped to a brilliant defence of Ange Postecoglou.

The former Parkhead boss has received continual criticism from fans, media, and pundits in England due to his stubborn ways.

Despite his side’s vast injury crisis, Postecoglou’s methods, which brought success in Australia, Japan, and Scotland, are continually questioned.

One can see why those unfamiliar with the 59-year-old would quiz his tactics: across their last five games, Spurs have scored 16 goals and conceded 14, winning two matches, losing two, and drawing the other.

They have been inherently inconsistent of late, but Given served to defend Postecoglou: “Well, as a Glasgow Celtic supporter, I thought he was a hero in Glasgow and did an unbelievable job,” he said (Football Daily Podcast).

“And I just think I would love to see them stick with him. I really would, because going back, even when we played, Tottenham were always an entertaining team to play.

“They were always on the front foot, always scoring goals, creating chances. I think that’s the way Tottenham like to play.”

If the Spurs faithful grant Postecoglou the gift of more time and trust his ways, success and silverware will eventually return to the white half of North London.

While their league position isn’t entirely positive, Spurs are in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and remain on course to progress to the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

Once their injured stars recover, too, their predicament will only improve. Given wants Postecoglou to be handed more time: “I would like to see him supported in January and at least give him to the end of the season and see where they end up,” he added.

Celtic fans have kept a keen eye on the progress of Postecoglou since he departed Parkhead a year and a half ago.

They trusted his process in Glasgow, and while he brought success almost immediately, that hasn’t proved the case in the English capital.
