Shane Duffy signed off as a Celtic player on Instagram by thanking the support.

The move didn’t work out at all for either party. A loan move that was lauded at the time as a great piece of business turned out to be a nightmare.

Shane recognises his shortcomings in his message to the fans and was still extremely privileged to play for his boyhood heroes.

The defender also makes mention of his struggles behind the scenes: dealing with the death of his father has had a profound impact on the Irishman.

Social media is a harsh place and with every mistake, more and more people piled on. Criticising someone’s ability on the field is fair game but too often it strayed into personal abuse.

The lad also received sectarian and vile abuse from rival supporters since joining the club – something Shane has challenged on several occasions.
