CELTIC WOMEN’S manager Fran Alonso has lifted the lid on the conversation he had with Ibrox coach Craig McPherson after the altercation post-match against Rangers Women.
Celtic scored a very late equaliser against their Glasgow rivals. After the goal, Celtic’s manager Fran expressed his joy by celebrating on the sidelines. Later, when Fran went on the field to congratulate his team and the opposing team, the Ibrox coach suddenly charged towards Fran and attempted to headbutt him from behind. McPherson was then pulled away while continuing to shout angrily at Fran.
McPherson is now serving a six match ban for the offence.
Fran revealed a conversation he had with McPherson after the unpleasant encounter.
Alonso told SunSport: “He called me to apologise and said that myself and Celtic did nothing wrong.
“For me that’s everything I wanted to hear, so I’m ready to move on.
“Our CEO, chairman and many of our directors, they called me to express how proud they were of my behaviour and my players’ behaviour.”
Fran is one of football’s good guys. If you get in a room with him, his energy and passion is infectious. To see someone trying to have a go at him speaks more about them and how they conduct themselves rather than anything Fran is putting out there.
The draw against Rangers Women was a vital point. It kept Celtic in second place and in with a shout of still winning the title. The Ghirls 4-2 win against Glasgow City at the weekend further strengthened their resolve for the run in and the Champions League spot up for grabs.
It’s an exciting part of the season for both the first team and the women.
