SFA Reach Decision on Vaclav Cerny Water Bottle Incident

Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny has managed to escape without a ban after his antics at Celtic Park last month, where he was caught on camera deliberately spraying water at Celtic supporters during Rangers’ goal celebration.

The SFA, after a brief review, have opted to issue only a formal warning to the player – a decision that has rightly left many Celtic fans questioning the integrity of the disciplinary process.

The incident occurred in the closing stages of the Glasgow Derby, with emotions understandably high following a late winner. But instead of celebrating with his teammates, Cerny took it upon himself to approach the home support and squirt water into the faces of several Celtic fans. The footage is clear, and the intention undeniable.

Even more frustrating for Celtic supporters is the silence surrounding Nedim Bajrami, another Rangers player seen engaging in the same behaviour.

Brendan Rodgers didn’t hold back when speaking about the incident. He called out Vaclav Cerny’s behaviour as showing a clear “lack of respect” and made it clear that such actions would never be tolerated from his own players. Rodgers recognised the emotion that comes with an Glasgow Derby but insisted that it’s no excuse for provoking supporters or escalating tensions.

This sets a worrying precedent ahead of next month’s trip to Ibrox in the Premiership top six split. With Celtic set to travel to Govan, it sends the message that this kind of behaviour is allowed. If Rangers players can get away with it, then surely Celtic players will be able to do the same without punishment?

Had the roles been reversed, it’s difficult to believe the outcome would’ve been the same. Celtic players and supporters deserve better protection. If the authorities can’t ensure a level playing field, we can only hope the Bhoys do their talking where it matters most – on the pitch.
