Celtic are reportedly back in the race for Manchester City midfielder James McAtee.

With the January transfer window just days away, the Scottish champions will face stiff competition for the 22-year-old, who is drawing attention from top clubs across England and Europe.
McAtee, who has made eight appearances for Manchester City this season, including two in the Premier League and three in the Champions League—where he scored—has informed City of his desire to leave in search of regular first-team football. Despite being on the bench for most league games, McAtee is eager for a more prominent role elsewhere, TBR report.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is known for not standing in the way of players seeking new opportunities. However, City would prefer to retain McAtee for the long term, recognising his potential.
Celtic have long admired McAtee, having targeted him back in 2023. Although a deal didn’t materialise then, the Hoops have kept tabs on the England U21 international, whose successful loan spell at Sheffield United a few seasons ago further elevated his profile. McAtee played a key role in the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League.
However, Celtic face significant hurdles in securing McAtee’s signature. In England, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Fulham, and West Ham United have all expressed interest. On the continent, clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, and Atalanta are also monitoring the situation closely.
Celtic will need to assess if they need another midfielder, but an exit could change Celtic’s position.
