Ronny Deila’s Hilarious Celtic-New York Anecdote

Countless noteworthy names in the world of Celtic were in attendance at the 20th anniversary of the club’s Player of the Year awards last night.

The current squad were rightly recognised for the fantastic campaign they have had so far, with the likes of Matt O’Riley, Kyogo, and Daniel Kelly picking up individual accolades.

A few Celts of years gone by also received awards including Scott Brown and Henrik Larsson, with the latter appearing rather emotional when on stage as the supporters serenaded him.

One of the award presenters was former Hoops gaffer Ronny Deila. The Norwegian’s time at Club Brugge recently ended, and he was delighted to return to Glasgow over the weekend.

He was at Parkhead for Saturday’s pivotal victory which all but wrapped up the title and when on stage at the Hydro, supporters were left a tad disappointed he didn’t wheel out a ‘Ronny roar’ for old times sake.

When speaking to official club media, though, Deila told a brilliant story about his time as boss of New York City FC which just goes to show the scale and influence of Celtic worldwide.

He said: “I’ve been some years in New York and I get recognised more because I was the Celtic manager than I was the New York manager so it says something about the size of the club and it says something (about) what Celtic are in the big world.

“To be a part of that history is huge for me.”
