Rodgers Thrilled by Double Celtic Comeback

Brendan Rodgers was understandably pleased with the returns of James Forrest and Paulo Bernardo in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Hearts at Celtic Park, with both players making appearances off the bench.

For Forrest, it was a particularly emotional return, as the winger had last featured in the Premier Sports Cup Final against Rangers back in December. Bernardo, on the other hand, had been sidelined since February, when he made his last appearance in the Scottish Cup win over Raith Rovers.

When asked how he felt about getting both players back on the pitch, Rodgers said: (Celtic TV), “Yes, absolutely. They’ve spent a long time out, James in particular. For them to feel the pitch again in a competitive game was really good.

“The big strength for us this season has been the squad. It’s helped us get through a busy schedule.”

For Forrest, who has been a part of the Celtic squad for 16 years, the return was a relief after a frustrating period on the sidelines. His experience and ability to win games will be vital for Celtic, as at this stage of the season last year, he came good with big goals and moments to secure a league and cup double.

For Bernardo, it’s been an up-and-down season. At one point, he fought his way into the starting XI from the bench with goals, but injuries have played their part in recent months. The Portuguese midfielder, like Forrest, came good at this stage last season, providing an assist off the bench against Rangers at Ibrox and playing a huge part in Adam Idah’s late winner in the Scottish Cup final. Celtic now have two players back who can deliver when it matters most, something that was missing against Barry Ferguson’s side before the international break.

The returns of both Forrest and Bernardo highlight the growing strength and depth in the squad. Rodgers has emphasised how important it is to have options off the bench as Celtic aim to seal a domestic treble. The return of the Hoops duo could be key in bouncing back from the criticism following the Glasgow Derby and ending the season on a high, with a trip to Ibrox still to come.
