Rodgers Discusses Halftime Reaction

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has opened up about the Hoops’ response at halftime following a challenging first half against Rangers this afternoon at Celtic Park. Despite being 2-0 down at the break, Rodgers revealed the steps taken to rally the team and the mindset shift that followed in the second half.

However, he also acknowledged that Celtic ultimately fell short in taking their chances to take control of the game.

A Tough First Half

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Rodgers admitted the position Celtic found themselves in at halftime was not one they had planned for. “Yes, and listen, you will have days like today. You never wanted to be here at home and gone 2-0 down,” Rodgers said. The Hoops faced a difficult first half, conceding two goals that left the team with a mountain to climb in the second period. Despite the setback, Rodgers remained focused on how to improve the situation and rally his players.

The Halftime Message

Rodgers revealed that there was a collective responsibility to address the issues during the break. “But, yes, there’s responsibility on everyone,” he explained. “Like I say, we got back into the game in the second half and got into a great position.” The manager was keen to make sure his players understood the importance of stepping up after the break and trying to get back into the match.

Celtic did manage to reduce the deficit and level the score at 2-2 in the second half, showing resilience and determination. However, Rodgers noted that even with the momentum shift, the team failed to capitalise on the opportunities presented.

Missed Chances and Final Frustration

Despite the fight back, Rodgers expressed disappointment that Celtic couldn’t go on to take control of the match. “And then we just failed to capitalise on that,” he said. Although the team showed positive signs after pulling level, they were unable to convert their chances and struggled defensively as Rangers ultimately secured a 3-2 victory.

Rodgers’ comments reflect the fine margins in such high-pressure games, where taking chances is crucial. The Celtic boss will undoubtedly be frustrated by the result but will also look for his team to learn from their mistakes as they push on in the final stretch of the season.

Looking Ahead

While the defeat is a setback for Celtic, Rodgers’ focus will now be on ensuring his side takes the lessons learned from today’s game into their next match against Hearts at Celtic Park. With the league title and Scottish Cup still up for grabs, Celtic will need to regain their composure and convert chances more clinically in future fixtures. The Hoops will be hoping for a better performance when they return to action just under a fortnight.
