Rodgers Pays Tribute to Unsung Hero in Celtic’s Second Goal

Jota will rightly take all the plaudits for his Man of the Match performance against Dundee United this afternoon, with his goal and Celtic’s second a thing of beauty.

The Portuguese winger displayed his trademark flair and composure, doubling the Hoops’ lead in the 35th minute with a well-placed finish that left the Dundee United goalkeeper with no chance. His goal was crucial in putting Celtic firmly in control of the match.

However, while Jota’s performance stole the headlines, Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers chose to shine a light on the selfless work of another Celtic player in the build-up to the goal.

With Celtic pressing high up the pitch, it was the intelligent movement of one of his teammates that created the space for Jota to exploit. Rodgers was quick to point out how the off-the-ball run of the player drew defenders away, allowing Jota the freedom to collect the ball and find the back of the net with ease.

He said: (The Celtic Way), “Jeffrey (Schlupp) opens up the space for it to go outside, then he makes a really good run that clears the space inside, and then it’s a wonderful finish.”

Schlupp did well in his second Hoops start, linking up well with Jota in a role that the Ghanaian defender isn’t used to.

He hasn’t played as an inverted full-back in his career at Leicester City and Crystal Palace. Instead, he has featured as a traditional full-back, a winger, and a central midfielder.

This means it is taking time for the Premier League winner to get up to speed, having joined on transfer deadline day.

However, against Dundee United this afternoon he showed that Rodgers’ and the Celtic coaching staff’s messages in training on how to play the role are clear and precise. With Schlupp’s physicality and pace, it is a role that he now is really beginning to thrive in.
