In what can only be described as a bizarre attempt at stirring a narrative, the Daily Record have suggested Brendan Rodgers is “quietly pleased” that Barry Ferguson won’t be handed the Rangers job permanently – based on the premise that Celtic dropped points to his side at Celtic Park after the title was all but wrapped up and drew the dead rubber game at Ibrox.

Keith Jackson has an exclusive chat with John Hughes, where he thought he could share his Brendan Rodgers insight.

It’s a ludicrous angle. Ferguson’s brief interim stint never truly sparked any long-term vision or form at Ibrox, with Rangers failing to win in five successive home games on the trot when he first took over and taking just six wins from fifteen under his watch. The writing was on the wall, and the board’s decision to move on surprised absolutely no one.
What’s galling is the suggestion that Rodgers would somehow see that as a negative. The truth is, had Ferguson remained, Rodgers likely would have been delighted. His Celtic side cruised to the title with a double-digit gap.
Back in April, Rodgers spoke perfectly about these headlines, saying, “There are very few people that know me and there’s even less that understand me. That’s a really small group of people. So when I see all the headlines?
“If there’s a headline out there, I’m telling you it’s a guess because hardly anyone knows what I think”
That message hasn’t landed, clearly. Fabricating headlines around one result and trying to pass it off as insight into Rodgers’ mindset is amateur hour journalism.
The Celtic boss is focused on trophies and with a league title already in the bag and a Scottish Cup final ahead, that’s all that matters. The noise from across the city remains just that – noise.
