Brendan Rodgers has leapt to the defence of Kasper Schmeichel following disgraceful and deeply personal abuse aimed at the Celtic goalkeeper by sections of the Danish media.

Schmeichel, 38, played through injury during Denmark’s defeat to Portugal in the Nations League, soldiering on in extra-time after all substitutions had been used. Despite his commitment, one columnist launched an astonishing personal attack, labelling him “plump” and cruelly comparing his punch to “a polio child”. The language used has drawn condemnation across Denmark, with the Danish Professional Footballers’ Association issuing a statement of strong disapproval.
Rodgers, who brought Schmeichel to Celtic in the summer, spoke out against the treatment his goalkeeper has received.
“All I know is where Kasper is, and the reason I brought him here, knowing him so well, is because he’s still a top-class keeper. I think if you look at his performance level for us over the course of the season, he’s been absolutely brilliant. In big games, he’s made big performances.
“And for me, he still has that hunger and that desire to play. So, when criticism comes as a coach, manager, player, whatever it comes, sometimes it’s not civil. Sometimes, like you say, it’s personal, sadly.
“But what I know with Kasper is he’s an outstanding goalkeeper. He’s been brilliant for this club since he’s come in. He’s been an incredible ambassador and performer for his country.
And I know, like I said in my spell at Leicester and here, working with him, how proud he is to play for Denmark and represent Denmark, and how much he wants to win with Denmark. But sadly, as well, sometimes, as a goalkeeper, you’re in there on your own in some ways. But I know his character and mentality, and I know how determined he’ll be to come back.” [Sky Sports]
With Schmeichel currently sidelined due to the shoulder injury sustained during the match, the Celtic boss’ backing will be a timely lift for the experienced stopper, who remains a key figure both at club and international level.
The manager isn’t sure how long the ‘keeper will be out for. He’ll miss the match against Hearts on Saturday but whether or not he’ll play again before the end of the season remains to be seen.
A few weeks back, the Dane signed a contract extension at Celtic, triggering the option for a further season in Glasgow.
