Review: The Tommy Burns Story

The Tommy Burns story which had a three day run at the Kings Theatre in Glasgow was hailed with praise as it captured the hearts of each audience it performed to.

After a successful run at Celtic Park, it was time for the play written by David Carswell to be performed in one of the city’s most iconic venues.

The reviews live up to what you are treated to on stage and more. From the very beginning, you are transported back to the mid 1970s and get a small insight into the Burns household through the years.

You experience the very highs of Tommy’s career as a player after he makes his debut against Dundee in 1975 right the way through to the Centenary season and his departure from the club.

It recreates moments which sum Burns the man up with that utterly iconic post-match interview with Jim White being portrayed as Burns said,

“That’s was so special about them right there, Jim. Just right up there; that’s what’s so special about them. They’re there and they’re always there. And God bless every one of them.”

Moving on from that, you get a sense of the manager too as he took over at the club during difficult days but imperatively reinforces a firm belief that much of the work Burns did in that period was the foundation to the modern day success which Celtic has achieved since.

There is plenty of laughs in the play with the use of the screen at the back being used expertly to convey joy and sadness in equal measures.

Tommy’s illness connects to anyone who has lost someone about the hurt and emptiness you feel but shows his extraordinary faith and acceptance in his fate.

As always family, faith and football are central to the story of Tommy’s life and it is very fitting that his son Michael is the executive producer of it all.

The cast were phenomenal but especially Liam Harkins and Sarah-Louise Greer who played Tommy and Rosemary.

The whole show was an emotional rollercoaster but is extremely powerful in everything it sets out to achieve.

A special play that celebrates the great Tommy Burns life.
