Report: Odsonne Edouard’s Bargain Transfer Fee

Odsonne Edouard’s time at Crystal Palace looks to be coming to an end, with the former Celtic striker now on the fringes at Selhurst Park and facing the exit door this summer.

The Frenchman, who joined Palace in 2021 after a hugely successful spell in Glasgow, has struggled to hold down a consistent starting place and is no longer seen as part of their plans.

After four seasons in South London, Edouard is now being frozen out of the first team — a stark contrast to the promise and pedigree he arrived with.

Edouard’s reputation was built at Celtic, where he became a talismanic figure under Brendan Rodgers and later Neil Lennon. Signed permanently from PSG for a club-record £9million after a sparkling loan spell, the striker quickly made his mark. Over four years, he scored 87 goals in 179 appearances, helping fire the Hoops to two domestic Trebles and several iconic wins.

His calmness in front of goal, particularly in high-stakes games, set him apart. Whether it was his memorable solo goal at Ibrox, his brace in the 2019 Scottish Cup Final to secure the Treble Treble, or his cool European finishes, Edouard consistently delivered. At his peak in Glasgow, he was unplayable — a blend of power, pace, and poise.

Celtic banked a profit when Palace paid £14million for him, and the Parkhead board also inserted a sell on clause which will either be minimal or nothing depending on the structure.

According to FootMercato, Edouard is now poised for a fresh start in Spain, with La Liga outfit Girona preparing to sign the 26-year-old for around €6million (£5.2m). The move is expected to form part of a roundabout surprise swap deal, which will see highly-rated defender Arnau Martinez head in the opposite direction to Palace in a deal worth roughly €10million (£8.7m).

Girona, who stunned Spanish football last season by finishing third and qualifying for the Champions League, are strengthening their squad ahead of a historic campaign — and Edouard is seen as a player who can bring quality and European experience to their front line.

Should the deal go through, it offers Edouard a welcome opportunity to reignite his career and return to the sort of form that made him one of the most feared forwards in Scottish football.
